In a method of producing hollow bodies of hard synthetic plastics, i.e. synthetic plastics which are inflexible in their final state, one part formed with a narrow rib on its edge to be welded with another part is placed with this edge in abutment with the other part to produce a substantially line contact between the parts and at least one of the parts along the line of such contact is softened by ultrasonic heating so as to weld the parts together at the line of contact therebetween. In one embodiment, Fig. 1 (not shown), either an ultrasonic vibrator 3 is moved around the edge of the parts 1, 2 or the parts 1, 2 are moved with respect to the vibrator 3 guided by copying device scanning a master piece. The vibrator may be shaped to be accommodated in a recess in one of the parts, Fig. 3 (not shown), or may be bell shaped, Fig. 4 (not shown). The rib may be ridged, Fig. 12 (not shown), or rounded, Fig. 13 (not shown). An oscillator 14, Fig. 8 (not shown), excites a magnetostrictive oscillator 15, Fig. 5, to which a vibrating element 16 having a welding profile 17 is connected. Cooling means 17a are provided for the oscillator 15. The parts 18 to be welded are situated between the profile 17 and an anvil 19. Either the parts 18 are positioned on the anvil 19 and the element 16 moved down thereon, Fig. 6 (not shown), or the operation is reversed, Fig. 7 (not shown). The parts to be welded are set up so that an antinode of oscillation occurs where welding is taking place.
