104,697. Sulman, H. L., Picard, H. F. K., and Metals Extraction Corporation. Jan. 22, 1916. Zinc sulphate.-In the extraction of zinc by sulphuric acid from roasted or unroasted ores or other materials, neutralization of the acid is completed by adding zinc hydrate. When acid of 10 per cent. strength is used, the ground ore may be added in successive portions, with vigorous agitation, until the acidity is reduced to 1-2 per cent. Zinc hydrate is then added and the mixture agitated for a short time. Soluble silica, if present, is preferably precipitated by agitating the solution at 90--100‹ C. After filtration, washings of the ore residues on the filter are precipitated by lime, and the resulting mixture of zinc hydrate and calcium sulphate is used for the neutralization of fresh mixtures of ore and acid. The filtered solution, containing, say 8-10 per cent. of zinc, may be freed from copper and cadmium by granulated zinc, or by agitation with zinc fume. It may then be electrolyzed until it contains 10 per cent. of acid, whereupon it is again employed for lixiviating ore.
