Abstract
104,680. Pearson, G. T. March 10, 1916, [Convention date]. Extincteurs.-A chemical fire-extinguisher comprises a vessel 3 containing carbon tetrachloride or other fire-extinguishing liquid, which is ejected therefrom by means of gas generated in the chamber 11 and dried and freed from acid by means of a substance such as anhydrous sodium carbonate in the chamber 12. In the casing 7 attached to the lid 5 is mounted a vessel 11, containing sodium bicarbonate, within which is a second vessel 15 containing hydrochloric or sulphuric acid and provided with outlet pipes 16. On inverting the apparatus, the sodium bicarbonate falls on the lid 5 and the acid drops through the tubes 16, the vessel 15 being prevented from dropping against the lid 5 by means of the rod 17. The gas generated passes through the gauze screen 18 and is dried and freed from acid by means of anhydrous sodium carbonate in the chamber 12, from whence it passes through the pipe 9 and check valve 10 into the chamber 3. To prevent the soda from passing into the vessel 3, the pipe 9 is provided with a perforated cap 19 and gauze strainer 20. In order that the liquid may be ejected in any position of the container, the outlet nozzle 22 is supplied with liquid by means of a tube 24 mounted to rotate about the axis of the apparatus and carrying a tube 35 closed at its upper end by a ball valve 30 in the cage 28. Co-axial with this tube is a tube 36, the inlet to which is also controlled by a ball valve 31. In a modification, the outlet pipe is carried through the apparatus to the top, the ball valves 30, 31 are connected by a rod and the cages dispensed with, and the acid chamber 15 is held fired by means of the rod 17.
