Briquetting processes; distilling zinc. - Zinc ores are mixed with coke, preferably in a finelydivided state, and a carbonaceous binding-material, and the mixture is briquetted. The quantity of coke used is more than sufficient to reduce the metallic oxides in the ore and is such that the weight of the briquette after distillation is not less than about 40-50 per cent of the weight before distillation. The quantity of pitch, tar, or other carbonaceous binder used is 10-15 per cent of the combined weight of the ore and coke, and the briquette maintains its form and volume during the process of distillation. The briquettes are dried and heated under non-oxidizing conditions, for example by embedding them in powdered coke to a temperature high enough to coke the binding- material, but not high enough to volatilize the zinc; the briquettes are then subjected to the usual distillation process for obtaining spelter or zinc oxide. During the drying and heating operation, the briquettes may be supported in cups of fire-clay &c. to prevent collapse; or if the briquettes are embedded in powdered coke, this will serve to support them.
