Abstract
Water-in-oil or oil-in-water emulsions obtained in desulphurizing light naphthas containing mercaptans, with basic aqueous solutions or found in bore holes and storage vessels may be separated into the constituent phases by feeding into an intermediate zone of an enclosure (normally a tube) of helical shape, the longitudinal axis of which is inclined to the horizontal, and rotating said enclosure about its axis, whereby said phases pass to opposite ends of the helical enclosure.
