Abstract

1,045,163. Locking nuts. C. H. HANFLAND. April 9, 1963 [Feb. 12, 1963], No. 14008/63. Heading F2H. A self-locking nut has at least two slots 2, 3, in the upper third of the nut body, formed by arcuate cuts and arranged symmetrically about the nut axis 4, extending in the same general angular direction as the nut thread but inclined to the nut axis at an angle greater than the thread pitch angle and crossing each other as shown, the wedge-shaped spring portions formed by the slots being deformed towards the nut body, e.g. by ovalizing. One end of each spring portion may be free by virtue of a separating slot, e.g. 13 or 14, Fig. 3 (not shown), extending from the nut end perpendicularly to the main slot 2 or 3 and tangentially to the slot end. There may be an extension collar, e.g. 12a, Fig. 4 (not shown).
