Abstract

A coating composition comprises a copolymer of maleic anhydride and a 1,1-dialkyl substituted ethylene or aralkene such as isobutene, 2-methyl butene-1, 2-methyl pentene-1, 2-methyl hexene-1, 2-methyl octene-1, styrene or a -methyl styrene. Up to one half of each comonomer may be replaced by one or more other copolymerizable monomers such as other olefins, maleimide or N-substituted maleimide, vinyl alkyl ethers, alkyl maleates and fumarates, nitriles of unsaturated acids, other unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydrides and halogen substituted derivatives of styrene. In the example a copolymer of maleic anhydride, isobutene and 2-methyl butene-1 was dissolved in acetone.ALSO:Metal surfaces are coated with a copolymer of maleic anhydride and a 1, 1-dialkyl substituted ethylene or aralkene such as isobutene, 2-methyl butene-1, 2-methyl pentene-1, 2-methyl hexene-1, 2-methyl octene-1, styrene or a -methyl styrene. Up to one half of each co-monomer may be replaced by one or more other copolymerizable monomers such as other olefins, maleimide or N-substituted maleimide, vinyl alkyl ethers, alkyl maleates and fumarates, nitriles of unsaturated acids, other unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydrides and halogen substituted derivatives of styrene. Many examples of such co-monomers are given. The copolymers may be applied to the metal in molten condition or as a solution or dispersion by spraying, brushing, dipping, or air or doctor-knife coating, or as a powder which is subsequently sintered: the metal may be pre-heated. The substrate may be iron, steel, copper, tin, bronze, brass, gun-metal, aluminium, magnesium, or magnesium-aluminium alloys and may be sand-blasted, phosphate-treated, etched or anodised before coating. In an example a plate of mild steel is coated and dried by heating.
