Abstract

A coating composition comprises a copolymer of maleic anhydride and a 1,1-dialkyl substituted ethylene or aralkene such as isobutene, 2-methyl butene-1, 2-methyl pentene-1, 2-methyl hexene-1, 2-methyl octene-1, styrene or a -methyl styrene. Up to one half of each comonomer may be replaced by one or more other copolymerizable monomers such as other olefins, maleimide or N-substituted maleimide, vinyl alkyl ethers, alkyl maleates and fumarates, nitriles of unsaturated acids, other unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydrides and halogen substituted derivatives of styrene. In an example a plate of mild steel is coated and dried by heating.
