Abstract

The surface of concrete, plaster or brickwork is water-proofed by treatment with an aqueous solution of an ammonium salt, or an aqueous ammoniacal solution, of a polycarboxylic acid in a concentration of 0.5-10% and applied in an amount of 0.5-50 gm/sq m of surface treated. The polycarboxylic acid is, or is derived from, a copolymer of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or an ethylenically unsaturated derivative thereof with another ethylenically unsaturated compound. The carboxylic acid monomer may be maleic acid, maleic anhydride, fumaric acid, diethyl fumarate, itaconic acid, or acrylic acid. The other monomer may be ethylene, propylene, or butylene; cyclohexene or cyclopentadiene; styrene, methylstyrene, ethylstyrene, indene, or benzofurane; vinyl acetate, propionate, butyrate, stearate, chloride, or cyanide; or vinylidene chloride. The ratio of carboxylic acid monomer to other monomer may be 0.1-5 to 1. The polycarboxylic acid may be a semi butyl ester or semi amide.
