Abstract

1,044,218. Boring earth &c. STICHTING WATERBOUWKUNDIG LABORATORIUM. July 10, 1963 [Aug. 2, 1962], No. 27375/ 63. Heading E1F. The shape of a soil sample is preserved by supplying liquid to the sample within a cutter tube, the liquid forming about the sample a substantially water-tight skin serving to transfer the pressure of the rest of the liquid to the sample. The liquid may be an aqueous suspension of clay-like material containing weighting material, or a heavier suspension of weighting material in a solution of a water missible organic solvent with a synthetic resin insoluble in water which forms a synthetic resin skin on the surface of the sample on contact with the water in the sample. When cutting long samples the synthetic resin suspension is supplied to the cutter tube and the clay-like suspension is supplied to the driving and extension tubes of the cutter tube, sufficient suspension being supplied to the cutter tube to form a skin on the whole length of the sample. The liquids may contain colouring matter, and the cutter tube may be of stainless steel or have a chromium plated inner surface. The lower end of the cutter tube may be closed by an element which is released at a depth at which it is desired to take a samble and floats upwardly through the liquids.
