Abstract

104,365. Brown, H. Feb. 26, 1916. Spirometers. - The clock-work indicating- mechanism in spirometers of the kind described in Specification 3716/13 is replaced by mechanism which depends for its operation on the gradual sinking of a body in a liquid during the period of exhalation. Fig. 2 shows one form of apparatus in which inner and outer cylinders c, a and an exhalation tube bare arranged as described in the above-mentioned Specification. A rod c<3> depending from the cylinder c is curved inwardly at the upper end and co-operates with a wire loop on the outer cylinder so as to tilt the inner cylinder when it occupies its lowest position. In the tilted position, the wire d hears against and locks the scale rod e and its attached piston f. As long as the cylinder c is raised by the exhalation, the rod e is unlocked and sinks gradually as the liquid passes the piston; but at the completion of the exhalation, the rod is relocked by the cylinder. The reading on the scale opposite the wire d is a measure of the quantity of air exhaled. A wire g limits the upward movement of the cylinder, and guide-rods a<2> for the cylinder c are fixed to the outer cylinder. In a modified construction, the upper part of the rod c may be bent back upon itself and caused to move over a scale on the outerwall of the cylinder a. In some cases, the rod e may be omitted and the piston attached by a cord to mechanism which actuates a pointer moving over a scale.
