Abstract

1,043,328. Cables. PIRELLI S.p.A. April 13, 1965 [April 21, 1964; April 22, 1964], No. 15628/65. Heading H1A. The required length of a stranded conductor 2 formed in stranding machine 1 is collected in a skein in one of a pair of storage zones 4, 4<SP>1</SP> by means of jockeys 3, 3<SP>1</SP> and is removed therefrom also by means of jockeys 3, 3<SP>1</SP> to a taping machine 5 where e.g. paper tapes are helically wound on. The insulated conductor core 6 is wound in untwisted coils by means of jockeys 3a, 3<SP>1</SP>a into one of a pair of tanks 7, 7<SP>1</SP> which rotate about a vertical axis. The closed tank is evacuated and heated and an insulating fluid introduced. The impregnated core 6<SP>1</SP> is withdrawn via jockeys 3a, 3<SP>1</SP>a by rotation of the tank in the reverse direction and passed to extruder 8, for example through an oil filled system immersed below the oil surface in the tank or by the means described in Specifications 827,410 and 846,334, for application of a metal, e.g. lead or aluminium, sheath. The sheathed core 9 is wound in a helix on platform 10, rotatable about a vertical axis, by means of jockey 3b, and is removed therefrom by reversing the rotation for conveyance to extruder 11 where a a sheath of plastics material, e.g. polyethylene or PVC, is applied. The so treated core 12 is collected in a skein in storage zone 13 by means of jockey 3c, and in due course is transferred via jockey 3c to armouring machine 14 for application of protective metal tapings, wire reinforcements, jute and tar &c. The finished cable 15 is collected in a skein in one of the storage zones 16, 16<SP>1</SP> and eventually loaded on to cable laying ship 18. The various parts of the cable manufacturing plant are illustrated in detail by Figs. 2-10 (not shown). In modifications part of the plastics sheath may be applied before the metal sheath, and a multi-core cable may be manufactured by cutting the stranded conductor wound with tape to a number of lengths which are combined, e.g. as illustrated by Figs. 11-13 (not shown), impregnated and subsequently treated in the same way as the single core.
