Abstract

Analgesic compositions administered by rubbing into the skin comprise at least one analgesic and at least one dialkyl sulphoxide. Exemplified analgesics comprise aspirin, phenacetin, paracetamol and phenylbutazone. The dialkyl sulphoxide may be dimethyl, diethyl, di-n-propyl, methyl ethyl or methyl ethyl sulphoxide. The compositions may be in the form of solutions, dispersions, emulsions, or pastes, and may contain conventional excipients. One or more compounds having a local beneficial action in the treatment of painful conditions, e.g. rheumatism, may be added. These compounds may comprise a C1-6 alkyl ester of nicotinic acid, e.g. ethyl nocotinate, and/or a C1-6 alkyl ester of salicylic acid, e.g. methyl salicylate.
