Abstract

1,042,541. Irrigating crops. A. P. PEDRICK. April 12, 1965, No. 15397/65. Heading A1B. [Also in Divisions B1 and G6] Food crops are grown in a shallow pan 86 (Fig. 9e) floating on the sea, the pan being provided with a layer of soil 83 (Fig. 9g) which is irrigated with desalinated water obtained by distillation of sea water which is boiled by heat conducted to it from a rotatable nuclear reactor. Sea water is pumped up through a pipe extending into the sea from the centre of the pan. The sea water flows radially outwards through spaces 65 between base-plate 62 and a heat-transfer plate 63, and while doing so the water is heated by steam, derived from water boiling around the reactor, condensing on the opposite side of plate 63. The warmed sea water flows inwards through tubes 66 and then flows upwards around screw blades mounted on the reactor, thereby maintaining it in rotation. The steam from the boiling water is conveyed to a turbine which actuates the sea-water pump. The steam discharged from the turbine flows into the space between heat-transfer plate 63 and porous plate 82, where the steam is partially or wholly condensed. The condensate, and any residual steam, permeates through plate 82 into the soil above. It is stated that a "floating farm" comprising several interconnected pans of soil, each 1,000 yards square, may be assembled.
