Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:1042472/C4-C5/1> in which the dotted line indicates that the compounds are saturated or unsaturated at the indicated position, each of X and X1 is a hydrogen atom or a C1-6 alkyl, C2-6 alkenyl, phenyl or substituted phenyl group; and more than substituent may be on each benzenoid ring; Y is a hydrogen atom; and Z is an allyl or an alkyl-substituted allyl group; and processes for their preparation comprising (a) reacting a compound of the formula <FORM:1042472/C4-C5/2> with a compound of the formula ZMgHal, wherein Hal is a halogen atom, and hydrolysing the reaction product, or (b) reacting a compound of the formula <FORM:1042472/C4-C5/3> wherein M is lithium, potassium or sodium, with a compound of the formula ZHal.ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:1042472/C2/1> in which the dotted line indicates that the compounds are saturated or unsaturated at the indicated position, each of X and X1 is a hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, bromine or iodine atom, or a C1- 6 alkyl, C2- 6 alkenyl, C1- 4 perfluoroalkyl, phenyl, substituted phenyl, C1- 4 acyl, C1- 4 perfluoroacyl, C1- 4 alkylamino, C2- 8 dialkylamino, C1- 4 acylamino, C1- 4 perfluoroacylamino, C1- 4 alkylsulphonylamino, hydroxy, C1- 4 alkoxy, C1- 4 perfluoroalkoxy, cyano carboxy, carbamoyl, C2- 5 alkylcarbamoyl, C3- 9 di-alkylcarbamoyl, C1- 6 carboalkoxy, mercapto, C1- 4 alkylmercapto, C1- 4 perfluoroalkylmercapto, C1- 4 alkylsulphonyl, sulphamoyl, C1- 4 alkylsulphamoyl or C2- 8 dialkylsulphamoyl group; and more than one substituent may be on each benzenoid ring; Y is a hydrogen or halogen atom; and Z is an allyl or an alkyl-substituted allyl radical; and processes for their preparation comprising (a) reacting a compound of the formula <FORM:1042472/C2/2> with a compound of the formula ZMgHal, wherein Hal is a halogen atom, and hydrolysing the reaction product, or (b) reacting a compound of the formula <FORM:1042472/C2/3> wherein M is lithium, potassium or sodium, with a compound of the formula ZHal.
