Abstract
104,232. Adams. F. W., and Read, A. S. March 8, 1916. Jacquards -The horizontal needles, or a set of intermediate needles in contact therewith, are bent or cranked out of their normal planes so as to fall into fewer horizontal rows at the ends adjacent to the cards, or where acted upon by the vertical needles in machines of the Verdol type, than at the other ends; in the Verdol type of machine, the intermediate needles are formed as hooks actuated by supplementary knives and controlled through vertical needles from the pattern surface to enable an endless paper web to be used, if desired, instead of cards. The invention is described as applied to a 300-size jacquard with intermediate needles 2, Fig. 3, which are bent so that their outer and inner ends 2<a>, 2<b> are arranged in two and six rows respectively in a needle board 8 and a division board 4. The ends 2b act on the ordinary needles 3 in a needle board 5. Narrow cards 9 with only two rows of perforations are employed and are guided by a roller 20 and pass over the face of a non-rotatable card plate 10 with two longitudinal slits 11 corresponding with the two rows of the needle ends 2<a>. Wheels 12 are adjustably secured to a shaft 15 and have teeth adapted to project through vertical slots in the plate 10 and engage driving holes or slots in the cards 9. One or two polygonal disks 16, Fig. 2, are secured to the shaft 15 and co-operate with spring-loaded hammers 17 to maintain the wheel 12 stationary while each card is in operative contact with the needles. Studs 18 on the disks are acted upon by spring-pressed turning-hooks 19 to turn the shaft 15 as the plate 10 is moved away from the needles. The steel rods which support the ordinary board 5 may be extended to carry the boards 4, 8 and the card plate mechanism; but preferably the board 4 is supported by brackets 23 bolted to the board 5 and having slotted lugs 24 for a pair of rods 25, which may be adjusted laterally in the slots. Two blocks 26 ara slidably mounted on the rods 25 and reciprocated by suitable means. Each block is provided with one or more adjustable rods 27, which carry the bearings 22 for the shaft 15. The hammers 17 and hooks 19 are supported on blocks 28 fixed to the rods 25 and carrying guides for the rods 27. To facilitate removal of a damaged needle 2, the board 4 is pivoted on a longitudinal axis at its bottom edge in lugs 29 on the brackets 23, and is rigidly connected with the board 8 by transverse bars. The board 8 is supported by a locking-pin 31, Fig. 3, which may be withdrawn to allow the boards 4, 8 to assume the position shown in dotted lines. To enable a paper pattern web to be used if desired, the intermediate needles are replaced by similarly-arranged hooks 35, Fig. 6, the front ends of which rest lightly on the beaded upper ends of vertical needles 36, which are raised by imperforated parts of the paper web 9 on a plate 10 to raise the corresponding hooks 35 into engagement with knives 41 secured to the sliding blocks 26, so that the desired hooks 35 are moved by the knives. The plate 10 and the pattern-surface operating wheel are carried by levers 37 with inclines 38, which are acted upon to raise the levers by rollers 40 on depending brackets 39 secured to the blocks 26.
