Abstract
1,042,323. Games; scoring appliances. P. W. ROOPE. May 3, 1963, No. 17616/63. Heading A6D. Apparatus for practising the game of bowls comprises an inclined playing surface, the inclination of which is adjustable, fitted with side rails and a resilient back stop, and provided with a scoring device for indicating the extent of travel of a bowl up the playing surface. The scoring device may comprise a rod 12 slidable by a bowl along the side rails 13 to move indicators 16 over scales 15 marked on the rails, or on the playing surface as shown in Fig. 1. Alternatively, a series of frames may be mounted in recesses in the playing surface, the frames being arranged to pivot as a bowl passes thereover to open and close leaf spring contacts or mercury switches in circuit with lamps on an indicator board. The arrangement is such that the frames pivot to complete their respective circuits as the bowl passes upwards over the playing surface, and pivot to break the circuits as the bowl returns under the action of gravity.
