Abstract
1,042,182. Paper; bonded-fibre fabrics. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. Aug. 23, 1963, No. 33383/63. Headings D1R and D2B. [Also in Divisions A2 and B5] Reinforced cellulosic sausage casings are made from a dispersion in viscose from 0.1 to 10% by weight of the cellulose in the viscose of at least one dimer of a ketene having the formula where R is an alkyl or an alkenyl radical containing 12 to 22 carbon atoms, annularly extruding the ketene dimer-containing viscose composition on to a fibrous reinforcement to form continuous tubing and regenerating the cellulose in said tubing. Specified ketene dimers include dodecyl, tetradecyl, hexedecyl, nondecyl, eicosyl, docosyl 7-hexadecenyl, 7-dodecenyl and eicosenyl ketene dimers, a mixture of tetradecyl and hexadecyl being preferred. Liquid ketene dimers may be mixed as such or as aqueous emulsions with the viscose. Solid ketene dimers are preferably added to the viscose as an aqueous emulsion, the emulsion containing conventional emulsifying agents, e.g. ethylene oxide derivatives of the partial esters of polyhydric alcohols such as glycerine, and sorbitan, e.g. polyoxyethylene derivatives of sorbiton monolaurate; soaps; and partial esters of polyhydric alcohols e.g. sorbitan monopalmitate. The fibrous reinforcement may be hemp fibre paper, yoshino paper, rice paper, nonwoven webs of nylon or polyethylene, or woven fabrics of muslin, cheese cloth, marquisette, organdie and foile of synthetic fibres e.g. nylon, or of natural fibres e.g. cotton, or flax. In Fig. 1, a porous fibrous web 10, e.g. of paper is fed over the roll, folded to form a tube 12, and passed through the forming ring 14 and leaves at mandrel 12 through the viscose extrusion means 16, supplied with the ketene dimer containing viscose from 20. The viscose flows from chamber 18 to annular orifice 19 and hence impregnates the paper tubing. The tubing is then passed through conventional coagulating and regenerating baths to regenerate the cellulose, the tubing washed, plasticized, and dried. In the apparatus of Fig. 2, the tubing is impregnated with ketene dimer containing viscose from tube 34 and then overlay coated with conventional viscose from tube 26. Coagulation and regeneration are effected as before. In the apparatus of Fig. 3 (not reproduced) ketene dimer containing viscose from 44 is applied to the interior surface of the tube, coagulation and regeneration being effected as before.
