Abstract

Rayon paper or a non-woven fabric is made by dispersing in water staple fibres formed from incompletely regenerated filaments obtained by wet-spinning viscose, said filaments having a "primary swelling value" of 250 to 2400% and a residual gamma value of 2 to 20 and thereafter forming paper or a non-woven fabric from the resulting dispersion. The "primary swelling value" of the filaments is determined by steeping a known weight of the bone dry filaments in water at 20 DEG C. for 5 minutes, centrifuging the swollen filaments thereby obtained at a centrifugal force of 1000G for 3 minutes and then reweighing the filaments. The "primary swelling value" is calculated according to the formula (W/WD) 100%, wherein W is the weight of the hydroextracted filaments and WD the weight of the bone-dry filaments. Incompletely regenerated cellulose suitable for the process of the invention, having a denier of 1 to 10 and a primary swelling value of 250 to 800% may be obtained by spinning viscose into an aqueous coagulating bath containing at least 250g/1 of sodium sulphate, less than 20g/1 of zinc sulphate and less than 30g/1 of sulphuric acid, and which is at a temperature of 10 to 45 DEG C., the filaments being in the bath for from 0.6 to 1.2 seconds and the bath liquor being removed from the filaments by stretching them by from 50 to 150% after their removal from the bath. Alternatively filaments suitable for the process of the invention, having a denier of 1 to 10 and a primary swelling value of 250 to 1900% may be obtained by spinning viscose the cellulose in which has a D.P. value of from 450 to 900 and which viscose has a gamma value of 60 to 100 into an aqueous coagulating bath which contains 30 to 300g/1 of sodium sulphate, 0.1 to 2.0g/1 of zinc sulphate and 3 to 25g/1 of sulphuric acid and which is maintained at 10 to 45 DEG C., the filaments being in the bath for 0.6 to 1.2 seconds and stretched by 150 to 220% after their removal from the bath. The staple fibres into which the filaments are cut may be from 2mm. to 20mm. in length. Paper and non-woven fabrics may be produced from the aqueous dispersions of the staple fibres by conventional methods. The water swollen fibres passes sufficient bonding power to render it unnecessary to add a binder, such as a synthetic high polymer, to the dispersion prior to making paper or woven fabrics therefrom.
