Abstract

Metal surfaces including Fe, Zn, Cd, Mg, Al and their alloys, Zn and Cd coated steel are treated first with an acidic aqueous solution containing a water soluble inorganic compound of Mo, P or a mixture thereof reactive with the metal e.g. orthophosphoric acid, ammonium molybdate, a minor proportion of an anionic metal reactive synthetic organic polymer e.g. polyvinyl, polystyrene and polyvinyl toluene sulphonic acids and their ammonium and metal salts, polyvinyl and polystyrene phosphonic acids and their ammonium and metal salts, methylacrylic acid polymers, copolymers and their salts, maleic acid copolymers with styrene and salts thereof and which may contain Ca or NH4OH, HNO3, Zn carbonate or oxide, phenyl glycol ether and phytic acid, followed by the application of an aqueous solution containing a minor proportion of an organic cationic substance, having a basic nitrogen atom effective to react with the anionic polymer, e.g. cetyl dimethyl ammonium chloride, N-methyl taurine, polyvinyl pyridine and polymerized ethylene imine.ALSO:Metal surfaces including Fe, Zn, Cd, Mg, Al and their alloys, Zn and Cd coated steel, are treated first with an acidic aqueous solution containing a water-soluble inorganic compound of Mo, P or a mixture thereof reactive with the metal, e.g. orthophosphoric acid, ammonium molybdate, a minor proportion of an anionic metal reactive synthetic organic polymer, e.g. polyvinyl polystyrene and polyvinyl toluene sulphonic acids, and their ammonium and metal salts, polyvinyl and polystyrene phosphonic acids and their ammonium and metal salts, methylacrylic acid polymers, copolymers and their salts, copolymers of maleic acid and styrene and salts thereof and which may contain Ca or NH4OH, HNO3, Zn carbonate or oxide, phenyl glycol ether and phytic acid, followed by the application of an aqueous solution containing a minor proportion of an organic cationic substance having a basic nitrogen atom effective to react with the anionic polymer, e.g. cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride dodecylmethylbenzyl trimethyl ammonium chloride dodecylmethylbenzyl trimethyl ammonium chloride and 2-hydroxyethylheptadecanyl-2-imidazoline.ALSO:Metal surfaces including Fe, Zn, Cd, Mg, Al and their alloys, Zn and Cd coated steel, are treated first with an acidic aqueous solution containing a water soluble inorganic compound of Mo, P or a mixture thereof reactive with the metal e.g. orthophosphoric acid, ammonium molybdate, a minor proportion of an anionic metal reactive synthetic organic polymer e.g. polyvinyl polystyrene and polyvinyl toluene sulphonic acids, and their ammonium and metal salts, polyvinyl and polystyrene, phosphonic acids and ammonium and metal salts, methalacrylic acid polymers, copolymers and their salts, heteromaleic acid polymers of styrene and salts thereof and which may contain Ca or NH4OH, HNO3, Zn carbonate or oxide, phenyl glycol ether and phytic acid, followed by the application of an aqueous solution containing a minor proportion of an organic cationic substance having a basic nitrogen atom effective to react with the anionic polymer, e.g. cetyl dimethyl ammonium chloride, N-methyl taurine, polyvinyl pyridine and polymerized ethylene imine.
