Abstract

The invention comprises polyphenylene ethers of formula <FORM:1041024/C3/1> wherein the oxygen of one unit is attached directly to the para-position of the phenylene nucleus of the adjacent unit, Y is nitrogen, sulphur or phosphorus, R1 is a hydrocarbon radical which is monovalent when joined to one Y group or polyvalent when joined to more than one Y group or may be hydroxy aliphatic when Y is nitrogen, or hydrogen when Y is nitrogen and p is 2; n is at least 10, preferably at least 100; m is a number which is an average for the molecule of from 0.01 to 2; p is 2 or 3 and q is 2 when Y is nitrogen, p is 3 and q is 2 when Y is phosphorus, and p is 2 and q is 1 when Y is sulphur; and R is hydrogen, halogen or a hydrocarbon, halohydrocarbon, hydrocarbonoxy or halohydrocarbonoxy radical. The polymers are prepared by reacting polyphenylene ethers having halomethyl groups (see Application No. 20675/63) with ammonia, amines, organic sulphides, tertiary phosphines or bisphosphines followed by reaction with a strong base. In examples, polyphenylene ethers containing bromomethyl groups and chloromethyl groups are reacted with trimethyl amine, N,N,N1,N1 - tetramethylethylenediamine, N,N-dimethylaminoethanol, dimethylsulphide, tri-n-butyl phosphine, and N,N,N1,N1-tetramethyl-1,3-butanediamine and then with sodium hydroxide. The polymers may be used as anion exchange resins.
