Abstract
In the preparation of a polyester moulding composition of predetermined friable or mastic-like consistency in which a linear unsaturated polyester comprising fumaric acid and maleic acid residues, such that the ratio of fumeric acid residues to the sum of fumaric acid and maleic acid residues lies between 20 and 100%, is mixed with a copolymerizable vinyl, allyl or acrylic compound, the desired consistency of the moulding composition is obtained by adjustment of the ratio of fumaric acid to maleic acid residues in the linear unsaturated polyester, said ratio being determined by the initial proportions of fumaric acid and maleic acid residues used in the preparation of the linear unsaturated polyester or by the degree of isomerization of maleic acid residues effected by an isomerization catalyst during the preparation of the linear unsaturated polyester. The maleic acid or fumaric acid residues may be derived partly or wholly from a derivative of maleic acid and/or fumaric acid such as dimethyl or diethyl maleate or fumarate, chloromaleic acid, chlorofumaric acid, citraconic acid or mesaconic acid. Conventional polyester-forming components, fillers, catalysts and inhibitors may be employed.
