Abstract

104,031. James, R. W., (Universal Chemical Sprinkler Corporation). Feb. 23, 1916. Fluid-actuated valves.-In an automatic sprinkling system gas or liquid is prevented from passing up the pipe 96, Fig. 2, by the valve arrangement shown. The spring pressed diaphragm normally holds the valve 86 in the position shown, but on a rise of pressure it is brought against the seat 11. A rod 16 attached to the diaphragm serves as an indicator. This diaphragm may also be used to close the air vent 90 by means of the valve 92 which is yieldingly connected to the valve 86 by means of a spring 85 bearing against the head 87 and cap 84. Check valves usable as stop valves; locking.- The check valve 131, Fig. 1, may be closed by means of the hand wheel 152 when the tank 50 is under pressure, the actuating device being locked against operation under normal conditions. For this purpose the hand wheel 152 has attached to it a ratchet wheel 149 engaged by a pawl attached to the diaphragm 146 so arranged that while under normal pressure the wheel may be rotated to move the bell-crank 156 into the position shown. but is locked against movement in the opposite direction. On a rise of pressure the diaphragm 146 releases the ratchet wheel and the hand wheel may be rotated in either direction.
