Coils and conductors. - Wire or strip B of magnetic material is wound on a solid or hollow core A<1> of wood, paper, asbestos, or insulated metal; parts a<2> of the core are tapered, and the ends of the wire &c. are placed in holes a<4>, a<5>. The convolutions of wire &c. need not extend right round the core, but may be zig-zagged, or made of separate lengths, and bent round, for example, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. Instead of wires or strips, a sheet of metal B<4>, Fig. 15, divided up by cuts or slots may be bent round the core in the manner shown in Fig. 5.
