Abstract
1,040,132. Pneumatic single stroke apparatus. GIRLING Ltd. Feb. 13, 1964 [Feb. 21, 1963], No. 6973/63. Heading F1P. [Also in Divisions F2 and G3] A servomotor suitable for operation of the master cylinder of a vehicle hydraulic braking system comprises a housing 10 with a fixed partition 26 and a movable assembly consisting of a diaphragm 25 backed by a piston 24 integral with a boss 64 and a diaphragm 27 backed by a resilient sheet metal disc 28 itself backed by a mushroom head 45 of a sleeve 43 secured to the boss 64 and slidable within an outer sleeve 44. Vacuum applied through a connection 42 to a chamber 20 has access through passages 30 in the partition 26 to a chamber 22 and, with valves 52, 67 in the positions shown, can pass from the chamber 22 through passages 63, 69, 70, 71 to a chamber 23 and thence through passages 31 in the partition 26 to a chamber 21. When an actuating rod 51 is moved inwardly it seats the valve 52 on the valve 67 to cut off the -vacuum connection with thechambers 23, 21 and thereafter lifts the valve 67 from a seat 73 to connect the chambers 23, 21 to atmosphere through passages 74, 75, 61 and an air filter 62. The movable diaphragm assembly then moves leftwardly until the seat 73 re-engages the valve 67. Should the servomotor fail to respond, continued inwardmovement of the rod 51 brings a member 56 into engagement with the end of the sleeve 43 to cause direct actuation of the diaphragm assembly. The valve 67 comprises a rubber diaphragm 68 backed by a rigid plate 72 and clamped at its periphery between the parts 64, 43. The thickened inner portion 47 of the diaphragm 27 is held in a groove 46 in the sleeve 43 by a U-shaped member 48 of spring steel which passes through holes in the outer sleeve 44 permitting relative movement between the sleeves 43, 44. The thickened inner portion 38 of the diaphragm 25 is secured in an annular recess 39 by a selflocking ring 40 with resilient teeth. The housing 10 is constructed as described in Specification 1,040,133.
