Abstract

1,040,054. Fifth-wheel couplings. HOLLAND HITCH CO. May 31, 1963, No. 21990/63. Heading B7T. A fifth-wheel coupling which may pivot fore and aft and tilt sideways comprises, a stationary frame 2 provided with arcuate bearing plates 10 extending between vertical plates 6, side braces 5 and flanges 4 whereby the frame 2 may be fixed to a towing vehicle, a fifth wheel plate 100 mounting pins 31 and rubber bushes 32, Figs. 4, 5, 6, about which it may pivot in a fore and aft direction, and cradles 11 comprising bearing plates 12 complementary to and engaging the plates 10, the plates 12 being secured to plates 14, 15 welded to bush bearing tubes 16. Welded to each of the plates 12, 14 and 15 are bearing risers 17 which fit inside hold down bars 13 which may be removable, and at the inner end of each of the cradles the ends of the risers 17 are joined by a plate 18 through which passes a tie rod 20. Rubber buffers 22 fixed to the rod 20 may in an extreme tilted position each engage one of a pair of stop plates 24 fixed to the frame 2.
