Abstract
Alumina hydrate is precipitated from a pregnant caustic aluminate liquor containing oxalate (degraded organic material), which oxalate also precipitates and contaminates the alumina hydrate, and precipitated solids are separated from the major portion of the mother liquor for recycle as seed to the aforesaid precipitation, the seed being washed with water to dissolve the oxalate and the washed seed being separated from the oxalate-containing liquor and thereafter recycled to the precipitation process. In Fig. 1, the contaminated alumina hydrate is fed to coarse particle-thickening system 10, from which the coarse particles are passed to washing apparatus 24 before calcination. The finer particles, separated by elutriation, are passed along with the major portion of the spent liquor to fine particle-thickening system 30, from which the overflow spent liquor is recycled to the digestion step and the underflow portion, containing the fine hydrate and solid oxalate, is passed to washing system 40 where it is washed with water at less than 32 DEG C. to remove caustic liquor and with water at 50 DEG to 90 DEG C. to dissolve the oxalate. System 30 may comprise secondary and tertiary thickeners illustrated in Fig. 2 (not shown), in which case alumina seed of different sizes is obtained and washed by processes illustrated in Figs. 4 and 3 respectively (not shown). The seed is recycled and the oxalate liquor discarded or sent to system 50 wherein the oxalate is precipitated, e.g. by the addition of lime and the caustic solution produced is recycled to the digestion step, the calcium oxalate precipitate being rectified or calcined to regenerate time. In other embodiments sodium oxalate is precipitated with strong caustic and converted to Na2CO3 or lead or barium oxalates are precipitated using the appropriate hydroxide. <PICT:1039985/C1/1>
