Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:1039380/C2/1> wherein R1 is a hydrogen atom or a C1- 6 alkyl group, and their preparation by (a) phenoxyacetylation or p-alkylphenoxyacetylation, including amide interchange, or (b) reaction of an N - (2 - haloacetyl) - N - methyl - amphetamine with phenol or a p-alkylphenol in the presence of a base.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions having antidepressant and anti-inflammatory activity comprise, in combination with a carrier, a compound of formula <FORM:1039380/A5-A6/1> wherein R1 is a hydrogen atom or a C1-6 alkyl group and R is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group. The compositions may be in forms suitable for oral, parenteral or rectal administration.
