Abstract

Asphalt, mastic, built-up felt and other sheet roofings, floors or roadways are underlaid with a thin paper like sheet material with a degree of stretch and an embossed pattern which will not collapse under heat, so that when covered with liquid asphalt, mastic or bonding liquid for the built up felt or sheet roofing, will unite therewith to mould it to the embossed pattern. The cavity between the embossed underlay and the supporting surface allows free circulation of air beneath the underlay. This cavity may be vented, drained or pumped out to remove moisture accumulations. The underlay is capable of recovering its form after being compressed and the embossed pattern is such that when adjoining sheets are overlapped, the patterns on adjacent sheets fit together. Edges of underlay may be treated with self adhesive so that overlapping edges will bond together, or may be treated with a thermoplastic substance which causes bonding of overlapping sheets when hot asphalt or bitumen is spread over them. The underlay may have perforations through the bases of some of its embossed depressions. The underlay may be of plastic, paper, fibre or metal foil or may be formed by layers of fibrous materials with an interleaving of a thermoplastic substance, e.g. paper and polythene.
