Abstract

1,038,769. Pneumatic tyres. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. June 25, 1963 [July 18, 1962], No. 27524/62. Heading B7C. A pneumatic tyre is provided internally of the carcass reinforcement with a restraining band 6 located radially inwardly of or adjacent to the radially inner periphery of the tyre, and extending across substantially the whole axial width of the tread, the band 6 being reinforced with parallel cords 9 so that the band is substantially inextensible in the circumferential direction of the tyre tread. The band 6 is formed integrally with the tyre or an inner tube 4, or alternatively may be a separate entity which is sandwiched between the tyre and the inner tube. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3, the restraining band 6 is formed integrally with the inner tube, the maximum diameter of the band being less than the maximum internal diameter of the tyre so that, upon inflation of the tube 4, the tyre is expanded axially and contracted radially, in the tread region, to conform with the profile of the inner tube 4. The band 6 comprises a single layer of parallel cords 9, formed of nylon or steel and embedded in rubber, each cord 9 running circumferentially of the tyre. In a modification, three layers of parallel, steel cords form the restraining band 6, the cords of each layer being disposed at an angle to the cords in each of the other layers. In a further embodiment tread studs 20 are provided, the radially inward force thereon being resisted by the restraining band 6. The layers of carcass reinforcement are formed with parallel cords which intersect the midcircumferential plane of the tyre at an angle of between 35 and 45 degrees.
