Abstract

1,038,710. Microprogramme-controlled computers. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. March 26, 1965 [April 4, 1964], No. 13981/64. Heading G4A. In a micro-programme controlled computer, the operation code of a macro-instruction is decoded to access a first micro-instruction and the address of a further micro-instruction is obtained from information in the macro-instruction, the further micro-instruction assuming control of the computer after the first micro-instruction or a sub-routine initiated thereby has been executed. Said first micro-instruction causes the address of the further micro-instruction to be calculated by adding the contents of an index location specified by the macro-instruction to an increment field in the macro-instruction. The macro-instruction also includes bits to set control latches (no details). The macro-instruction is called a DIAGNOSE instruction and said further micro-instruction initiates a sequence of micro-instructions which ends when the first micro-instruction of a " fetch next macro-instruction " routine is encountered, or alternatively can end when a particular address is reached in the micro-programme store or after a predetermined number of microinstructions have been executed, a counter being decremented to zero in the latter case. In other macro-instructions, the instruction may specify, operation (decoded to get the first micro-instruction), one operand and the address (as above) of the other operand. The microprogramme read-only store may be as in Specification 985,347 which is referred to.
