Abstract

1,038,109. Optical apparatus. BECKMAN INSTRUMENTS Inc. Sept. 16, 1964 [Oct. 7,1963], No.37922/64. Heading G2J. A micro-volume sample cell for spectroscopic analysis and other optical measurements, wherein the cell block from the optical mask defining the cross-sectional area of the beam, comprises a cell body 11 having a plurality of side walls 13-17 defining a cavity 18 and aperture 20 extending therethrough and terminating at the outer faces of side walls 14, 16, where it is sealed with transparent windows 23, 24, contiguous to the faces of walls 14, 16, and covering the aperture 20, there also being provided a removable insert 12 fitted into the cavity 18 and seating adjacent one side wall so as to define one limit of the aperture, the cell body 11 and insert 12 being opaque from 175 millimicrons to 3 microns. As shown the side walls 14, 16 have V-shaped slots 21, 22 to facilitate filling and a small angle #, such as 2 degrees is provided between the faces 32, 33 of insert 12 and side walls 13, 15, of cell body 11 to reduce capillary action between them.
