Abstract
1,038,090. Boots &c. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. [UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CORPORATION], May 10, 1963 [May 16, 1962], No. 18795/62. Heading A3B. In a machine for applying and attaching an adhesive ribbed strip to a shoe insole of the tlpe described in Specification 936,795 the strip 16 passes around a rotatable heater 40 to condition the adhesive and the strip. The rotatable heater 40 consists of a drum 46 which is free to rotate on a shaft 66 and which is heated by. an electric heater 74 which has two heating elements, one of which is thermostatically controlled. The heater is supplied with current via leads 77, 78, contact rings 80, 82 and brushes 86, 88. The heated drum is enclosed in a case which has a hinged portion 52 which can be opened to wrap the strip around the drum when starting the machine. The drum is surrounded by polished reflector plates 98, 110, 114 to minimise heat losses and to keep the casing cool. The strip is fed from a supply spool 20 (Fig. 2, not shown) through a tensioning device and then around the drum, the strip being prevented from wrapping round itself by a guide finger 118 (Fig. 4, not shown). The strip 16, which consists of a wide portion 16<SP>11</SP> and narrow portion 16<SP>1</SP> stuck together over part of their width then passes to a guide 42 where it is opened out to form a ribbed strip and is then stuck to the insole.
