In a joint which permits movement between an inner and an outer element a groove of rectangular cross - section formed in the surface of one element adjacent to the surface of the other houses an elastomeric ring of which the dimensions of cross-section in the direction of the width of the groove is at all times less than the width of the groove and the initial dimension of cross-section in the direction of the depth of the groove is initially greater than that depth, so that relative axial movement between the members will deform the ring within the width of the groove. Fig. 2 shows an expansion joint between pipes 1 and 4 in which the ring 3 is housed in a groove formed at 2 in the pipe 1. A similar arrangement of ring and groove may be formed in a ring- shaped bracket for supporting a pipe (not shown). The ring may be severed so as to be discontinuous.
