Abstract

1,036,873. Seals. CORDS PISTON RING CO. Ltd. May 6, 1963 [May 7, 1962] No. 17542/62. Heading F2B. A shaft sealing means comprises a housing or bearing member 6, Fig. 1, in which a shaft member 4 is mounted for relative rotary or axial movement, an annular groove or channel 10 extending about the axis of the shaft, and a sealing ring 11 arranged in the groove or channel and incorporating split ring elements disposed side-by-side, there being at least one ring element 12, Fig. 2, of cupped or dished formation disposed between ring elements 13 of flat formation, or the sealing ring being arranged to exert axial and radial pressure on adjacent parts of the members to form a seal between the members. The housing 6 may comprise part of a crank cass 1 of an engine having a liner 3 for the shaft. An annular housing 5 is inserted into the housing 6 and co-operates with the sealing ring. The dished element applies axial pressure to the elements 13 which bear against the walls 9 of the groove and act radially outwardly to engage the inner surface of the annular housing 5. During rotation of the shaft, the sealing ring normally remains stationary, and radial vanes 15 may act to throw oil into an annular channel 8. The sealing ring may have a pair of dished elements with their outer peripheries touching and their inner peripheries abutting the elements 13. One or more than two flat elements may be arranged on each side of the dished element. In another embodiment, the seal 26, Fig. 8, is located in a channel formed by a flange 21 on a shaft having a grooved portion 24 and a part of the housing, the flat elements 13 acting radially inwardly to grip the shaft so that the seal rotates with the shaft. In a further embodiment for sealing a shaft 42, Fig. 11, of a transmission mounted in a bearing 39 in a housing 38, the seal is disposed between a washer 43 and an outer race 41 of the bearing. In an embodiment in which the shaft 62, Fig. 18, of a control valve for an oil burner moves axially relative to a bearing 63, a pair of seals 66 is provided located one in each of two grooves formed by the bearing and plates 67 secured to the bearing, the flat rings being arranged to act radially inwardly against the shaft.
