Abstract

1,036,838. Charging metal melting furnaces. G. WEDDIGE. April 21,1965 [April 22, 1964], No. 16818/65. Heading F4B. Metal bars 3 are delivered to a crucible 9 from a stack in a magazine 2 by a conveyer operated in response to a device sensing the level of the molten metal in the crucible. A pusher 13 carrying a roller 21 on its top and having a nose 20 engaging the lower layer of bars 3 is driven by a screw 16 from a motor 17 controlled by a switch 26 connected to a float 25 on the melt. A spring-loaded brake 24 holds the lowest bar in position until the pusher 13 is operated, and when the last of the bottom layer of bars has been charged into the crucible, a limit switch returns the pusher to the upper end of its travel, where it pushes a support roller 22 clear of the next layer of bars which slide down the nose 20 of the pusher to the grating 5 forming the floor of the magazine. Hot gases from burners 11 heating the crucible pass through the grate 5 to preheat the bars in the magazine.
