Abstract

1,036,552. Two-stroke engines; driving gear. S. R. ROTHWELL. May 15, 1965, No. 20643/65. Heading F1B. [Also in Division F2] In a two-stroke engine with compression of the charge in a charging chamber 22 between the piston 1 and a closure member 16 for the lower end of the cylinder, the piston rod 8 is connected to a gudgeon pin 10 of a connecting rod 19 by a carrier member 11 provided with thrust members 14 engaging part cylindrical bearing surfaces 15 which withstand the side thrusts of the connecting rod. The charging chamber has automatic flap inlet and outlet valves 25, 27, the outlet valve discharging to a transfer passage or passages 28 discharging into the cylinder through either poppet valves or piston-controlled ports. Alternatively the inlet and outlet valves 25, 27, may be piston-controlled, the piston having several arcuate sections 4 controlling the various ports. The carrier 11 is in two parts bolted together around the piston rod 8 and gudgeon pin 10, the connecting rod having a single little end embraced on the pin 10 by a forked portion of the carrier 11. In a modification, Figs. 15-17 (not shown) the end 73 of the piston rod 8 passes through the carrier and the gudgeon pin 72 and the connecting rod 78 is in two halves bolted together. The piston rod 8 is preferably tubular and may be bolted to the piston, Fig. 38, or cast in with the piston, Fig. 40 (not shown). The interior of the piston is vented to an annular space 34, Fig. 38, inside the rod 8 and lubricating oil is supplied through a tube 31 in the rod to passages 49 leading to a piston ring recess. The piston may be of steel or aluminium alloy and the piston rod 8 preferably of steel. The piston rod 8 passes through a seal 36 in the member 16, the seal being formed by sealing rings 52, Fig. 45 (not shown) sealed directly in the member 51 or in a separate sealing mounted in member 51. The carrier 11 is preferably of aluminium alloy and may be faced with a bearing material, e.g. a slipper of sheet steel coated with white metal. In an opposed piston engine, Fig. 33 (not shown), the two charging pumps 22 feed either a common inlet port 28 or two separate inlet ports.
