Abstract

Organopolysiloxanes stated to be water-dispersible and fixable to a water-repellant form so that aqueous dispersions can be applied to a surface and fixed thereon have the general formula <FORM:1036082/C3/1> wherein m is more than one but less than 3, all the R groups being linked to Si, at least one being H, at least one being -R1-CH(OH)-CH2-O-R11, and the remainder being alkyl, aryl or hydroxy radicals. R1 is alkylene or -Rv-O-Rvi-where Rv and Rvi are alkylene and -O-R11 is a polyglycol ether radical. They may be obtained by reacting an organopolysiloxane <FORM:1036082/C3/2> wherein at least one siloxane unit has the formula <FORM:1036082/C3/3> where n is 1 or 2 and R111 is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical free from aliphatic unsaturation, and the remaining units have the formula <FORM:1036082/C3/4> where x is 1, 2 or 3 and R1111 is H, alkyl, aryl or OH, at least one R1111 per molecule being H, at 100 to 150 DEG C. with a polyglycol ether containing at least one free OH in proportions providing at least one OH per epoxide group. In examples such epoxypolysiloxanes are reacted with polyethylene oxide or a copolymer of ethylene and propylene oxides and a 20% aqueous solution of the product mixed with 3% of an emulsion of water, dibutyl tin dilaurate and polyvinyl alcohol (79:20:1) used to impregnate absorbent paper which is rendered hydrophobic by drying at 130 DEG C.ALSO:Paper, wood, textiles and leather are rendered water-repellant by impregnation with aqueous solutions of polysiloxanes <FORM:1036082/D1-D2/1> where m is between 1 and 3 and at least one R is H and another-R1-CH(OH)-CH2-O-R11 with the remainder being alkyl, aryl or OH (see Division C3). R1 is alkylene or-RV-O-RVI; RV and RVI are alkylene, and-O-R11 is a polyglycol ether radical. Paper may be treated with an aqueous composition comprising siloxane, dibutyl tin dilaurate, and polyvinyl alcohol.
