Abstract

Isonitriles of the formula R-(NC)n, where R is an aliphatic, araliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic radical and n is 1-6, are prepared by contacting R-(NHCHO)n with a tertiary amine and an acylating agent in the presence of an organic solvent, treating the reaction mixture with ammonia at from - 60 DEG to 100 DEG C. and separating the isonitrile product. Suitable acylating agents are COCl2, POCl3, PBr3, PhSO2Cl and toluene sulphonyl chloride. Many formylamine starting materials are specified, including compounds in which R is substituted by dimethylamino, ether and ester radicals, cyano, halogen, nitro, keto, carbonate ester, thioether, amino and thiophosphoric ester radicals.
