103,563. Canda, F. E. March 29, 1916. Rolling balls; rolling.-Balls, ellipsoids, and other solids of rotation are made from bars of steel or other metal by rolling between grooved dies. The bars are fed by a treadle-operated pivoted guide 18<a> Fig. 2, oetween a rotating grooved roller 1 and a curved grooved die 11 adjustably mounted on the frame 14, which is provided with inspection openings. The last acting portion 16 of the die is separately adjustable. The die 11 is laterally adjusted by screws 14q, Fig. 3, and the roll 1 is laterally guided by shoes on screws 14‹. The waste ends are caught in shoots 27, and the balls are stripped from the roll grooves by a toothed plate 22 and fall into a tempering-bath. In a modification, the bars are fed by toothed wheels 34, Fig. 8, driven from the shaft 4, and the curved die is mounted directly on the bed. Sand &c.. to cause the roll to " bite " en the work, is supplied from a hopper 39. In another modification, both dies are flat, the finishing-portions 43, Fig. 10, being separately adjustable. In all the modifications, the grooves are not quite semicircular, but are cut away as shown at 25, Fig. 7.
