Abstract

1,034,694. Charging and discharging batteries. BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORPORATION (OPERATING) Ltd. May 14, 1965 [June 5, 1964], No. 23436/64. Heading H2H. In an airborne satellite having two or more batteries B1, B2 charged from solar cells CA, means are provided for changing the connections between the batteries and solar cells a number of times during each period of darkness and light so that during darkness, each battery alternates between standby and discharge and during daylight each battery alternates between full charge and trickle charge. The battery is charged during daylight by a timer operated switch ABC which is also controlled by a lowvoltage detector so that the battery having the lower voltage is maintained in the standby condition during darkness and trickle charge during the day. A radio signal over channel T1 may revert the sequence to normal. In the event of low output from another array of solar cells RA directly supplying the load, a comparator C1 reduces the load when the low voltage is during a period of daylight. An orbit counter OC restores the full load during darkness when a given number of orbits is sensed by the sun sensor SS. During launching, the batteries in parallel supply the load through switches S1, S2 which are returned to normal by another radio signal through channel T2 when the satellite is correctly orientated.
