Abstract

1,034,418. Treating fibres and finishing yarns. BRITISH NYLON SPINNERS Ltd. June 24, 1964 [July 17, 1963], No. 28222/63. Heading D1F. [Also in Division B5] Apparatus for treating filamentary material in a fluid comprises a conduit 5 for a fluid under pressure, means for entraining filamentary material so that it runs concurrently with said fluid in said conduit (yarn inlet tube 7), a chamber 9 leading out of said conduit downstream thereof and located within a tubular member 11, said chamber having a mean diameter greater than that of said conduit to allow for rapid expansion of said fluid therein, and fluid exhaust means in said chamber to allow for egress of part at least of said fluid independently of the egress of said filamentary material, comprising the cage of rigid rods 13, made of copper wire, or nylon bristle, and the fluting of the downstream portion of tubular member 11. In this case the egress of fluid (generally air) admitted at inlet pipe 1 is in the axial direction of the chamber 9. At the discharge end of the tubular member 11 is fitted a pile fabric tensioner 15, through which the yarn may be withdrawn as a single strand to a wind-up roll (not shown). Means may also be provided for collecting the filamentary material from the chamber in a concentrated mass, e.g. a bag, suitably formed by seaming a piece of fabric folded to form a tube in the vicinity of the open end of the chamber, or a basket of gauze construction, a tubular container. Means may be provided e.g. a drawtwister draw roll and wind-up means, to withdraw the filamentary material continuously from the tubular container as a single strand, or to heat the filamentary material within the tubular container. Whilst in a bag or container, the material may be treated e.g. dyed, washed, set in steam or dry heat, or impregnated with a dressing. Drawn nylon yarn may be so treated on a drawtwister by collection within a tubular container immediately after leaving the draw roll, and the yarn allowed to relax whilst passing slowly through the container in a concentrated mass of layers of coils, relaxation being speeded, if required, by the application of heat to the yarn within the container, the yarn then being wound up on a cheese or bobbin. A converged bundle of undrawn nylon filaments may be forwarded, at a rate sufficient to draw the filaments, so that the bundle forms itself into a concentrated plug-like mass, which may be collected in a gauze basket. As an alternative fluid exhaust means for allowing the independent egress of the fluid, the chamber may have a longitudinal slot in its periphery, or, alternatively, it may have a proportion of its periphery cut away and a gauze circlet surrounding it to ensure that the filamentary material remains within the chamber. Again, the walls of the chamber may be perforated, or be made of perforate material. If the conduit leads into the chamber from an eccentric position, the filamentary material will tend to be formed into coils sloping diagonally forward within the chamber rather than into coils nearly perpendicular to the axis of the chamber, as is the case with a concentric conduit and chamber. If the chamber is of non-circular cross-section, e.g. rectangular or elliptical, the crimp when the apparatus is used under conditions suitable for crimping e.g. as a stuffer-box crimper, will be likely to be of a more zig-zag nature than when the cross-section of the chamber is circular. Yarn-like strands of staple fibres may be treated as well as continuous filaments.
