Abstract
1,034,376. Coding and decoding apparatus. ANSTALT EUROPAISCHE HANDELSGESELLSCHAFT. Sept. 17, 1963 [Sept. 19, 1962], No. 36538/63. Heading G5X. A visual coding and decoding system comprises a chart 1a containing parallel rows of randomly arranged characters disposed so as to co-operate with an ordered row of characters on a sliding arm 16. The particular row, which may correspond to each word or letter of the text to be encoded, is selected by means of a keyboard-actuated device 3 and pulley arrangement shown. Having located the desired row, the letter to be encoded, E say, is located on the sliding arm and the corresponding code letter Z is found directly above in the adjacent chart row. Decoding for this row is the reverse of this procedure. In a further embodiment decoding is made easier by having a decode row either on the back of the chart (Fig. 1a, not shown) or grouped with the code row on the front of the chart (Fig. 1b not shown), the code letter Z is then located on the slide arm and the decode letter E read off from the decode row. The slide member may be provided with a viewing window which may be additionally adjustable by pegs with the code or decode row (Fig. 2, not shown). In further embodiments the chart may be in the form of a scroll or an endless band or may be cylindrical.
