Abstract

1,034,009. Electrophotographic apparatus, RANK XEROX Ltd. Nov. 6,1964 [Nov. 12,1963], No. 45231/64. Heading G2H. In apparatus for simultaneously charging and exposing a photo conductive layer a web 2 having a conductive backing 9 is fed beneath a biased control screen 12 at least one side of which has a photo conductive layer 22. The screen may be conductive interwoven strands, copper mesh or metallic screening. An image of an original 1 is projected through the web 2 on to the screen, while a corona discharge is connected to power supply 24. The layer 22 becomes more conductive in illuminated areas and a latent electrostatic charge image conforming to original 1 is formed on web 2. The latent image is developed in apparatus 30 by resinous toner particles mixed with carried particles and fixed in chamber 31 by heat or solvent vapour. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown) a conductive shield 38 surrounds an electrode 17. A latent electrostatic image is formed on member 35 which may be of glass, paper, cellulose acetate or polyester film. The upper surface of member 35 is light reflecting or if member 35 is transparent table 36 is reflecting. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown) the screen 12 is attached to an earthed conductive shield 25. The screen 12, Fig 4 (not shown) may be positioned between electrode 17 and projector 40. A heating element 43, Fig. 5 (not shown) is positioned beneath member 35 of heat deformable plastic, e.g., Stay belite or Piccolastic, so as to form, upon '.eating, a frosted image pattern of a latent electros.atic image.
