Abstract
An olefin is oxychlorinated by reacting a gaseous mixture of olefin, hydrogen chloride and oxygen or oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a fluidized catalyst which is cooled by indirect heat exchange with water passing through a cooling system, the amount of water being regulated in accordance with the catalyst temperature so that substantially the whole of the water is converted into steam, which is collected. In an example 1,2-dichloroethane is obtained from ethylene. The catalyst may be CuCl2 or other heavy metal chloride or alumina.ALSO:In a reactor for exothermic catalytic reactions (e.g. fluidized oxychlorination: see Division C2) the catalyst is cooled by indirect heat exchange with water passing through a cooling system, the amount of water being regulated in accordance with the temperature of the catalyst so that substantially the whole of the water is converted into steam, which may be collected and used e.g. for pre-heating the cooling water.
