Abstract

Spheroidal TiS2 particles comprising concentric laminae of plate-like crystals of TiS2 round a core of TiS2, each particle being less than 4.8 mm. diameter, having a brassy appearance and making a greenish-black smear when rubbed on a light surface, may be prepared by fluidizing a bed of TiS2 granules of at least 0.1 mm. diameter, in the absence of an oxidizing atmosphere, by passing TiCl4 vapour and H2S, through the bed, in a molar ratio of 1 : 2 to 1 : 6 respectively, at a temperature of 400-700 DEG C., and removing the particles before they reach 4.8 mm. diameter. The gaseous reactants may be passed through the bed with a linear space velocity of at least 0.03 m/sec. The gas mixture may contain gases inert to the reactants, and preferably contains a minor proportion of N2.
