In a continuous towel dispenser towelling 40b, Fig. 3, is gripped beneath lip 33 and pulled outwardly and downwardly through opening 34 off a supply roll 40 in a hinged trough 25, over a measuring roller 45 and pinch roller 52, chain gearing 51 turning drive roller 56 which frictionally turns roller 60 taking up soiled towelling 40a. Projection 51b on the chain acts on cam 71 to turn lever 65 anti-clockwise on its pivot 66 to press together suction cups 78, 79, having a valve-controlled air bleed, and move stop 67 into the path of a tooth 48 on roller 45, stop withdrawal after a predetermined length of clean towelling is obtained and an equal length of soiled towelling wound on roller 60. On pulling out clean towelling, the previously used towelling 40c, which was lifted by a spring motor 125, 128, Fig. 6, on a roller 147 into a rear compartment 101, is pulled down over roller 152 to provide an adequate amount of towelling and maintained in its lowered position by a finger .149 on plate 135 carrying roller 147 engaging stop 92 on lever 89 which is moved into position by the end 87 of lever 65 when it is rotated to its stop position: When the suction cups part, spring 72 lifts lever 65 to release stop 92 whereupon the soiled towelling is lifted into the rear compartment 101 and the measuring roller freed for further dispensing. The last portion of towelling is retracted completely into the compartment until plate 135 abuts leaf spring 155 since no towel tension restricts movement of the spring motor 125, 128. The plate 135 may be lowered manually at 153 on its guide rollers 139 for reloading.
