Abstract
Oxidizers for liquid rockets, fuels such as hydrazine are compounds of formula F2N2Ox where x is 3-6 (see Division C1).ALSO:The compounds FN3, FNO3, FNO2, FONC, FClO3, FClO4, FCN, and F2N2Ox (x=3-6) are prepared by reacting F2 with the corresponding metal salt (viz. an azide, nitrate, nitrite &c.) in the presence of a "moderator" less reactive to F2 than are the metal salts. All the metals in periods 2-6 are specified, those in periods 2-4, especially alkali metals are preferred. The "moderator" may be a polar or non-polar liquid in which the metal salt is at least partially, preferably at least 1%, soluble, having a melting-point below 40 DEG C., and is used in amount 0.5-200 parts per part metal salt. Examples are alkanes, e.g. with 5-10 C atoms, haloalkanes with 1-8 C atoms, aromatic hydrocarbons with 6-12 C atoms, or their chlorinated derivatives, aliphatic ketones, ethers or amides, e.g. with alkyl groups having 1-8 C atoms, water, alkanols with 1-6 C atoms, or alkylene glycols with 1-6 C atoms, (specific examples given), or mixtures. The reaction may be carried out in a Ni or polyethylene coated reactor at - 40 DEG to +40 DEG C. and under sub-, super-, or atmospheric pressure, employing stoichiometric amounts of reactants. F2 may be diluted with an inert gas, e.g. He, N2. The product if gaseous is collected on a cold trap, and if non-gaseous by filtration crystallization, extraction and/or distillation. Metal fluorides are formed as by-products.
