Abstract

1,033,180. Machine tool details. M. HENSOLDT UND SOHNE, OPTISCHE WERKE A.G. Dec. 23, 1963 [Jan. 5, 1963], No. 50652/63. Heading B3B. [Also in Division G1] A two-stage scale reading device for use in measuring lengths or angles comprises coarse and fine counting mechanisms 4, 5 with tens transmission and optical and mechanical means which drive the fine mechanism 5 and the number wheel 18 for the lowest decimal place of the coarse mechanism, the number wheel being turned back by an amount corresponding to the fraction of a measuring scale interval indicated in the fine mechanism. Motion of a machine tool slide is transmitted to the counting mechanism 4 by a pinion 7 engaging a rack 6 on the slide, chain gearing 8, differential gears 9, 14 and spur gears 15, 16 and 17, 18. To obtain a precise reading, the image of a graduation on a scale 1 on the slide is projected through a plane plate 20 and a micrometer screw 29 is rotated to move rack gearing 30, 32 and tilt the plate 20 until photo-cells 26, 27 receiving light from the scale are balanced as indicated by a magic eye 28. Displacement of the rack 30 rotates the differential gear 9 through a lever 34, thus affecting the coarse mechanism 4 and rotation of the screw 29 is conveyed to the fine measuring mechanism 5 by chain gearing 35. A knob 40 is used to reset the counters. In a modification, the micrometer screw 43, Fig. 4 (not shown), rotates a rhombic prism 41 to obtain a symmetrical setting in a photoelectric device above the prism. The latter device can be adjusted to read a scale at right angles to the scale 1. In a further modification, the number wheels of the counting mechanisms rotate brushes 53, Fig. 7 (not shown), to give a luminous indication on tubes 56. These indications can be repeated or printed. In further modifications, the scale co-operates with a displaceable grid or a scanning slit.
