Abstract

103,309. Siemens & Halske Akt.-Ges. Jan. 12, 1916, [Convention date]. Addition to 17233/15. Machines for photographic copying; stripcontrolled electric driving-mechanism.-Apparatus of the type described in the parent Specification for printing type characters and other matter photographically is modified by the substitution of one source of photographically active rays only for the number of sparkgaps employed in the construction described therein. The rays pass through type stencils, and the rays for one type stencil may be picked out and diverted to the printing posi. tion, or all the rays may be diverted more or less so that the rays from the desired typestencil reach the printing position. The apparatus shown comprises a rotatable roller 32 which bears the sensitive printing surface and is moved continuously in an axial direction during printing. The roller carries a rack 34, Fig. 3, which rotates a sprocket wheel 37 through gearing 35, 36 and the sprocket wheel 37 draws a strip 38 between a contact block 42 and contact springs 43, the strip being perforated so that electric circuits are successively completed to operate the ray diverting means. Printing is effected by means of a frame 3, Fig. 1, bearing the type-stencils and an optical-projection system comprising a source of light 4, which may be permanent or in the form of a spark-gap, a condenser 6, a projection lens 7, and a mirror 8, the whole being adjusted so that the focal plane of the image of all the stencils coincides with the surface 1. The image may be enlarged or reduced, and the mirror 8 forms the ray diverting means, being rotatable about horizontal and vertical axes, so that the particular character thrown on to the surface 1 through an aperture in a plate 9, provided with a shutter 5, may be varied. As shown in Fig. 4, the mirror 8 is mounted on a vertical rotatable hollow spindle 62 and is connected by links 26, 25 to a rod 24 which may be raised or lowered by electro-magnetically operated levers 10, 11, 21. The lever 10 has a fixed pivot 19, and is normally held by a spring 17 against the upper of two stops 13, 14. A spring 18 and stops 15, 16 are similarly provided in connexion with the lever. 11, which is mounted on a pivot 20 carried by the lever 10. The lever 21 is connected to the lever 11, and has a fixed pivot 22 and operates the rod 24 by a loose connexion with a sleeve 23. By energizing one or other, or both, of the electromagnets 28, 29 the mirror may be turned about in horizontal axis into one of three positions. The vertical spindle 62 may be rotated by a similar system of electro-magnetically-operated levers. The perforations in the strip 38 are arranged in accordance with the character to be printed and pass between the block 42 and springs 43 to permit the completion of the circuits of the electromagnets; one row of perforations and a spring are provided to operate instantaneously the shutter 5 after each adjustment of the mirror. The Specification as open to inspection under sect. 91 (3) (a) states that the rays of light when magnetically deflectable may be deflected either wholly or in part by electro-magnets so as to cause the image of any desired character to be thrown on to the printing surface. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
