Abstract

Trioxane is polymerized or copolymerized with not more than 20 mol. per cent of at least one monomer selected from alkylene oxides, cyclic formals, cyclic carbonates, cyclic esters, polybasic acid anhydrides and vinyl compounds, using a catalyst comprising (1) at least one halide of boron, aluminium, iron, tin or antimony and either (2a) at least one non-metal halide capable of affording sulphonium cations or capable of affording phosphonium cations or (2b) at least one oxygen-containing heterocyclic compound or both (2a) and (2b). With components (1) and (2b) at least one of acetyl chloride, trionyl chloride and phosphoric oxychloride is used as activator. Polymerization is carried out in an inert solvent, in the molten state, or in solid phase, at temperatures in the range 0-100 DEG C. and at presence ranging from high vacuum to superatmospheric.ALSO:A trioxane polymerization catalyst comprises (1) at least one halide of boron, aluminium, iron, tin or antimony and either (2a) at least one non-metal halide capsule of affording sulphonium cations or capable of affording phosphonium cations or (2b) at least one oxygen-containing heterocyclic compound, on both (2a) and (2b). Compound (1) may be BF3AlCl3, FeCl3, SnCl4, ShCl5. (2a) may be thionyl chloride, sulfuryl chloride, where sulphonic acid halides, benzene sulfuryl chloride, phosphorous oxychloride, phosphorus trichloride, phosphorus pentachloride, (CH3)4PCl or C6H5 POCl2 (2b) may be an alkylene oxide, styrene oxide, epichlorohydrin, ethylene carbonate or lactone. (Examples are given). With components (1) and (2b) these may be used as activator (3) at least one of acetyl chloride, through chloride, phosphorous oxychloride. The catalyst components may be used in proportions equivalent of component (1) to 0.5-20 equivalents of (2a), (2b) or (2a)+(2b) and up to 50 equivalents of components (3) when used.
